FIELD NOTE / IN THE DRAFT

A paragraph needs
a reason to be there.

A useful paragraph contributes to the answer and helps the reader follow the connection.

Name its job

Before polishing sentences, ask what this paragraph is doing: advancing a claim, explaining evidence, considering an objection or establishing a distinction.

Connect evidence and interpretation

Evidence does not explain its relevance by itself. Say what the reader should notice and how it bears on your claim.

Test the sequence

Read only the first sentence of each paragraph. Does the order make sense? If the logic feels abrupt, consider what connection is missing.

Revise at the right scale

Moving a paragraph may do more for clarity than editing a sentence. Work from the overall argument to the smaller details.
